How to apply for, renew, or restore a licence to work as a security guard.
Who can apply for a security guard license?
- be 18 years of age or older
- be eligible to work in Canada
- have a clean criminal record
- have taken the security guard or private investigator basic training course
- have passed the security guard or private investigator basic test
Step 1: Take the basic training course
To become a security guard or private investigator, you will need to complete a basic training course.
Find a training provider or learn more about the basic training course.
Step 2: Take the test
Take and pass the security guard or private investigator basic test to obtain your Ontario testing completion number.

Please read the instruction guide for information on how to prepare your required documents.
Note: incomplete applications will result in delays to processing your licence.
Step 4: Apply online
Once you have downloaded, completed and scanned your documents, you can apply for the licence online. Your application will be processed within 10 business days.
What’s happening after you apply for a security guard license?
If you applied online, you can check the status of the application within 2 business days.
Once your online application is approved, a digital copy (PDF file) of your licence will be available online while your card is being mailed out.
Important to remember!
You must carry your licence card at all times while on duty. If you are asked, you must identify yourself as a security guard and show the front of your licence to anyone who asks to see it. This includes:
- employers
- police
- any member of the public
