Thinking Globally, Connecting Locally (dipnote)

We often hear about the scientists looking at climate change issues on the International Visitor Leadership Program, but we rarely hear about the family in Scottsdale that hosted the group for an American-style dinner or introduced them to local business leaders. Our “Diplomacy Begins Here” Summits are showing a larger audience how integral American “citizen diplomats” are to exchange programs.
Phoenix, Arizona was the site of our first summit.  I traveled there in November to kick off the series, which will continue in cities across the United States throughout 2015.  The purpose of the summits, which we’re implementing with our partner organization, Global Ties U.S., is to showcase how local communities throughout the United States make invaluable contributions to the work we do as diplomats.  The network spans 44 states, 90 local organizations and 40,000 people, and we hope to expand it even more. We want people to know that it doesn’t take a lot of time to Expand Your World.
