Research Assistant in History (OpenUniversity.ac.uk)

We are looking for a Research Assistant to work on a two-year AHRC-funded project on prison education in nineteenth-century England. The project will include a survey of educational programmes that existed in penal institutions across England between c1820 and c1890, as well as a series of case studies on particular institutions and evidence of outcomes.

You will have, or be about to obtain, a PhD in a relevant subject (including nineteenth-century social history, the history of reading, the history of education, or historical criminology), knowledge of nineteenth-century Britain, and experience in finding and using archival materials for historical research. It would also be an advantage to have some knowledge of the history of the prison in Britain, as well as some experience in preparing academic research for publication.

You will be expected to work closely with the Principal Investigator. The position requires initiative and includes opportunities for career development.
